Amazon has announced that a mistake by Amazon Web Services put several “high-profile” sites offline at the start of March 2017. The sites affected by the mistake included the image hosting site Giphy and the online forum Quora. Amazon explained that during a routine de-bugging of the Amazon Web Services billing system, “one of the inputs to the command was entered incorrectly and a larger set of servers was removed than intended”. Around 150,000 sites were affected in total.
